ZED Mid is the range Allen & Heath aims at bands, houses of worship and venues that have outgrown a compact desk. Every model carries channel inserts on the mono inputs, XLR main outputs with insert points, a 2-in 2-out USB interface, 3-band EQ with a sweepable mid, and 100 mm faders rather than the short-throw faders found further down the range.
The preamp is where the ZED range earns its reputation. Allen & Heath's DuoPre design splits the gain into two stages, which keeps noise down and headroom high across the whole range of the control rather than only at the top of it. It is the same R&D team that builds the preamps on the company's flagship touring consoles.
MusiQ EQ was designed specifically for the ZED mixers. Rather than borrowing a generic curve, the analogue engineers set the target frequencies and the slope of each band around what actually needs correcting on instruments and voices, which is why it tends to sound right with less movement of the controls.

Sixteen, each on a mic/line channel with its own insert point, plus three stereo channels for playback and line sources. That covers a full band with a comprehensively miked kit and a vocal group.
Larger bands, houses of worship with a full band and choir mics, theaters, and venues that need sixteen preamps with per-channel inserts but do not need sub groups or a matrix.
Both carry 16 mic/line channels with inserts. The ZED-22FX has 3 stereo channels, 3 auxes plus a separate FX bus, and an onboard effects engine. The ZED-24 has 4 stereo channels and 4 auxes and no effects.
If a set of channels regularly needs to move together on one fader, or a matrix is required for delay and fill speakers, then yes and the ZED Max range is the answer. If the mix goes straight to the main outputs, ZED Mid is enough.
| Mic/line channels | 16, with inserts |
| Stereo channels | 3 |
| Aux sends | 3 plus internal FX bus |
| USB audio | 2 in / 2 out |

Allen & Heath has built mixing consoles in Cornwall, England since 1969, starting with desks for Pink Floyd, Genesis and The Who. The company still designs its own analog preamps and EQ in house, and the same R&D team works on both the flagship dLive touring systems and the compact ZED range. That is why a small ZED mixer carries preamps developed alongside consoles used on arena tours.
